What is Call Barring?

Call barring is a feature that lets you control which destinations your organization can call. The aim is to reduce the risk of unauthorized or costly calls, while maintaining flexibility where needed.

This means that you immediately receive a secure standard where only a limited selection of safe destinations are allowed and premium calls are disabled.

This applies by default:
  • Level: Low exposure
  • Payment destinations: Disabled

Click on the information icon next to each level to see a list of all included destinations.

How the levels work

Call barring is based on different levels that control how widely you can call internationally. The higher the level you choose, the more destinations are opened up.

The interface clearly shows how many destinations are included in each level. If you want to know exactly which countries are included, you can click on the information icon next to each level. This will display a list of all included destinations.

Change the setting for the entire organization

If you need to open more destinations, do so via the organization settings.

Go to:

Organization Settings → Telephony System → Call Barring

Here you can:

  • choose a different permission level
  • see how many destinations are included
  • click on the information icon to see exact countries
  • activate calls to paid destinations

The change applies to the entire organization, so choose a level that suits the majority of users.

Exceptions for individual users

It is common for some users to need to call destinations that are not included in the organization's level. Instead of opening it up to everyone, you can put an exception directly on the user.

Go to:

Organization Settings → User Accounts → Users

Select the user and add the destinations that should be allowed.

This way you can:

  • maintain a secure standard for the entire organization
  • while giving specific users the right access

Permissions and logging

To make changes, the correct permissions are required:

  • Change call barring for the organization: Telephony system
  • Add exceptions to users: Users & Teams + Telephony System

All changes are logged in Audit Logs, making it easy to follow up on what has been changed and by whom.

What is affected by Call Barring?

Call barring applies to all calls made via the service.

It includes:

  • The apps
  • mobile via MEX

If MEX is not activated, regular mobile calls from the mobile phone (i.e. not from the app) are not affected.

Recommendation

A good way to work is to keep the default level of Low exposure and instead work with exceptions where needed. This provides a good balance between security and flexibility without opening up more than necessary.
